David Popper

David Popper was born December 9, 1843 in the town of Prague. He grew up there and studied music at the conservatory there. Julius Goltermann apprenticed Popper and he soon began to seize attention. His first tour was in 1863 at age 20. Many praised his cello talent including Hans von Bulow. His tours included places such as Switzerland, Holland, England, and Germany. In Vienna in 1867 Popper made his debut and became the principal cellist at the Hofoper. Popper soon wanted to tour on a larger scale so he resigned. He then began to give concerts all over Europe. From 1896 to his death in 1913 he taught at the Conservatory at Budapest. Popper died at the age of 69 in Baden.

Popper is a exceptional writer and player. He has written several etude books, I am currently in the "15 easy pieces" they really are a delight to play. These etudes challenge not only the bow hand but the left hand also. Mixing different styles and techniques his etudes can range from easy to difficult. Some of his pieces he wrote incolude a Requiem for three cellos and orchestra and also the ever-popular cello solo called Tarantella. Popper also wrote instructional pieces for the cello. Over all Popper was a magnificant composer of music and on of the best cellist of his time. ~Jordan Boon
